Incorporated in 1899, the town of Seaside has long been one of the most popular oceanfront communities located along Oregon's Pacific Coast. The small town boasts a residential population of approximately 6,445 but can swell in size during the summer season.
The charming oceanfront community of 4.14 square miles is located in beautiful Clatsop County, Oregon. The town's long history as a resort is reflected in the community's name. The name of Seaside was derived from the name of the Seaside House, a historic summer resort. The Seaside House built by the railroad magnate Ben Holladay was first opened in the 1870s.
Shortly after Lewis and Clark returned from their successful expedition, settlers made their way into the northwestern reaches of the country's Pacific Coast. Fur trading, trapping, fishing, and logging became popular in the region, and in 1811 Fort Astoria was established in the region.
By the 1820s settlers began arriving in the area to make claims on the land. Additionally, people made their way to the Pacific Coast to experience the stunning beauty of the Oregon Coast. Those in search of a beautiful vacation experience would travel by water down the Columbia to Fort Astoria and then travel to the seaside.
The need for lodgings along the scenic coast became apparent, and in 1850, Seaside's first guest home was opened. In 1870, Ben Holladay purchased the property and built a luxurious seaside resort. Holladay named his hotel the Seaside House. The house stood as an imposing Italian-style villa along the coast. The grounds of the estate extended over the acreage that is today Seaside Golf Course. The luxury resort was a thing of beauty and featured impeccable landscaping, a first-class race track, stables, a wooden bridge, and a fish trap.
By the turn of the century, the town was growing to meet the demands of the ever-increasing numbers of area visitors arriving by rail. Over the next century, Seaside has grown into a fantastic town that supports the most popular resort economy to be found along the Northwest Coast.
