History

Knappa dates back to the 1800s when Lewis and Clark passed through on their infamous expedition. They told about the experience in their diary and log; allowing future residents of the area to know how their town was founded and what history lies within the soil. According to the BLM, the first recorded land owner in Knappa was Aaron Knappa, the early settler who purchased the original 40 acres that the community sits today in 1872. In the same year, the city’s first post office opened, making the community officially a place for settlers to live.

Economy

Being on the coast and in timber, the primary economic factors in Knappa are fishing and logging. These two industries bring in the most revenue to the town, providing excellent careers to those who live in the area. Other careers include those who work in the school district as well as other career opportunities in nearby Astoria or even Portland which is only about an hour away from Knappa. Given the proximity to larger cities, even though they are typically about an hour away, are also a popular choice for those who want to achieve success in more professional services but want to enjoy all that small town living has to offer.

Since the community only has a population of about 2000 people and is basically hidden away on the coast of the Columbia River, there is no need for large office buildings or headquarters of large corporations. Those who live here want the quiet life; to live in a place where they can live off of the land growing their own food and maintaining their own properties. They may want to work and play in the big city but the travel time it takes to get from Knappa to Portland, Centralia or even Tacoma are well worth both the gas and the time.

Education

The Knappa School District dates back to the 1890s although the district decided to separate from Clatskanie District in 1998. Throughout time, the school district has maintained high standards for their students, faculty and curriculum. They have often pumped out high quality graduates who go on to become community leaders who often go on to higher education both in the region and across the country. There are currently two schools in the district, Hilda Lahti Elementary provides education to the younger students in grades K-8 while Knappa High School offers education to high school aged students in grades 9-12. After high school, most students go on to higher education at one of the numerous colleges in the region including Pacific University in Forest Grove; Lower Columbia College in Longview and Centralia College in Centralia; just to name a few. There are countless other colleges in both Oregon and Washington where students can earn any kind of collegiate degree they want. The location of Knappa means that anything is possible, and close to home.

Lewis and Clark Wildlife Refuge

The Lewis and Clark Wildlife Refuge starts in Knappa and stretches on both sides of the Columbia River where it encompasses various islands that are only accessible by boat. Because it is difficult to access, this refuge is home to many aquatic and wildlife species who make the river, timber and pasture their home. The refuge was first founded in the 1970s but has remained little known to those who were not active in the wildlife field until recently. The refuge was aptly named after the Lewis and Clark expedition since the refuge marks the path the duo took while they explored the area and enjoyed the wildlife that surrounded them.
