The city, which is located in Clatsop County, has quite an interesting history. Initially called Lexington when it was planned in 1848, this place became the first county seat for Clatsop County. As time went by, the name Lexington was changed to Skipanon for the river that flowed through the city. Eventually, the city adopted the name Warrenton after New Yorker Daniel Knight Warren who moved to the town and played a key role in the humble beginnings of the city. In 1899, the city of Warrenton was officially incorporated.
